               2 octavo volumes (resp. 2+IV+428+120 pages & 12+489+2+44 pages) volumes, this is the first collected edition of  both volumes;

               vol.1 was first published in 1673; vol 2 was first published in 1693. This is also the first edition with 3 copperplate engravings;

               contents are based on a tour made in 1666.

               "Towards the middle of the seventeenth century (...), a group of people emerged [... whose] attitude is indicative of the new, modern approach to

               science and to academic study in general. (...) The new style of scholarly journey followed one of a number of basic patterns. In the field of natural

               history the interests of scholars were very broad.: scientific research was still at the stage of seeking and recording specimens rather than solving

               problems, and journeys were necessarily undertaken in order to collect specimens and compile introductory classifications. A tourist who was

               interested in botany , however, also collected minerals and sometimes insects as well; whenever he visited cabinest of curiosities, he would also

               examine the medals, the old coins and hundreds of other exhibits, which today would defy the imagination. This is nowhere more obvious than in

               the writings of John Ray, a member of the Royal Society, who set out for the Continent in 1663. Although Ray could be described as a naturalist,

               his account which was published posthumously, contains some extremely pertinent remarks about economics and innumerable observations

               on a variety of other subjects, including notes about certain collections of specimens, which would be regarded today as being of little importance.

               Anything that was 'new', 'rare', 'odd' or 'amazing' was worthy of attention."

               (from Travel in early Modern Europe, by Antony Maczak, pp. 191, 193)

               De biologieboeken van John Ray waren toonaangevend in zijn tijd, ook in Nederland.

               In 1765 verscheen bijvoorbeeld een 2e druk van "Gods Wysheid Geopenbaard in de Werken der Scheppinge" [etc.]

               Het was een tweede druk, "volgens den twaalfden druk uit het Engelsch vertaald", (€ 55,-)

               In 1768 verscheen bovendien een "Vervolg op de Verbeterde Tweede uitgave van J. Ray" getiteld Beschouwingen van de Werken der Natuur (€ 80,-)
