‘Alle taalplooien zijn nu geëffend'

De Nederlandse Taalunie is ‘geweldig trots' op de nieuwe spelling en wil dat graag luid en duidelijk gezegd hebben. Van spellingsfetisjisme is geen sprake, spellingsmoeheid wordt niet bespeurd.
Het donderdag gepresenteerde Groene Boekje , waarin alle nieuwe regels van de lexicografie zijn opgenomen, heet een proeve van logica en bekwaamheid te zijn.
Piet van Sterkenburg, lid van de Taalunie en verantwoordelijk voor de nieuwe woordenlijst, durft zelfs de stelling aan dat 'we' de beste spelling van Europa hebben. ‘Het Engels wordt in Engeland en Amerika verschillend gespeld, de Duitsers zijn het onderling ook oneens en de Fransen zijn helemaal waardeloos op het gebied van spelling.'
In de herziene versie is volgens hem lang niet zoveel gewijzigd als wordt beweerd door collega-taalkundigen. De enige serieuze verandering betreft de tussen-n in een combinatie van woorden, zoals pannenkoek . In 1995 was een uitzondering gemaakt voor samenstellingen van een dierennaam en een plantkundige aanduiding. ‘Daarop kwamen zoveel reacties, zowel van biologen als van taalkundigen, dat we die uitzondering hebben geschrapt.' Paardebloem wordt paardenbloem en apenootje wordt apennootje. ‘Alle oneffenheden zijn gladgestreken.'
De gelijkschakeling bewijst volgens van Sterkenburg dat de Taalunie wél openstaat voor suggesties en zich niet bezondigt aan spellingsfetisjisme. 'Alles is er bij ons juist op gericht om de spelling gebruiksvriendelijker te maken.'
Het nieuwe Groene Boekje werd donderdag geïntroduceerd door verantwoordelijk minister Van der Hoeven van Onderwijs. De nieuwe spelling mag van haar geen vrijbrief zijn voor uitgeverijen van schoolboeken om met ingang van het nieuwe schooljaar ouders op kosten te jagen met aangepaste uitgaven. Het Groene boekje ligt vanaf zaterdag in de winkel en wordt in 2006 van kracht.
De grootste winst van de herziening is volgens haar dat ook andere autoriteiten, zoals Van Dale, Prisma en de spellingscontrole van Microsoft, voortaan dezelfde regels hanteren. Zij mogen zich voortaan onderscheiden met het keurmerk van de Nederlandse Taalunie. Van der Hoeven: ‘Ik durf bijna met mijn hand op mijn hart te verzekeren dat nu overal op de officiële manier gespeld zal worden.'

The Dutch Taalunie is ‘extremely proud' of the new spelling system, and it doesn't mind saying so loud and clear. It has nothing to do with spelling-fetishism, there is no trace of spelling fatigue to be found.
The Groene Boekje which was presented on Thursday, and which includes all new lexicolographical rules, is referred to as the paragon of logic and competence.
Piet van Sterkenburg, member of the T aalunie and responsible for the new list of words, actually ventures to say that ‘we' have the best spelling system in Europe. “The English language is spelled differently in England and America, Germans are also at odds with each other, and the French are no good at all with spelling.”
In his view, the number of changes made is not by far as great as some of his fellow linguists are professing. The only serious change is with respect to the inserted 'n' in word combinations such as pannenkoek (= pancake). In 1995, an exception was made for derivative compounds consisting of an animal name and a plant designation. “This caused so many reactions, both from biologists and from linguists that we have omitted that exception.”
Paardebloem (= dandelion) becomes paardenbloem and apenootje (= peanut) becomes apennootje . All irregularities have been ironed out.”
According to Van Stekelenburg, the harmonization proves that the Taalunie is open to suggestions and it not guilty of spelling fetishism. "To us, everything is aimed at making the spelling system more user-friendly."
The new Groene Boekje was presented on Thursday by the competent Secretary of State for Education, Van der Hoeven. She holds that the new spelling-system should not give publishers of textbooks a free hand in imposing extra costs on parents at the start of the new school year by releasing adapted editions. The Groene Boekje will be in the stores as from Saturday, and it will take effect in 2006.
In her opinion, the main advantage of the revision is that other authorities as well, such as Van Dale, Prisma, and Microsoft's spelling-checker, will henceforth use the same rules. From now on they can distinguish themselves with the quality mark of the Dutch Taalunie . Van der Hoeven: “I'd almost go as far as to guarantee hand on heart that everybody will now use their spelling in the official way.”
