Amsterdam weer in toptien van meest leefbare steden

Amsterdam staat net als vorig jaar op de tiende plaats van de meest leeefbare steden in de wereld. Het internationale bureau Mercer Human Resource Consulting concludeert dit na een jaarlijks quality of life-onderzoek in 215 steden over de hele wereld.
In Amsterdam blijft het verkeer een heikel punt volgens Mercer. De aanleg van de Noord-Zuidlijn maakt het er niet beter op. Verkeersopstoppingen en slecht doorstromend verkeer zullen niet snel uit het straatbeeld verdwijnen.
Mercer houdt bij dit jaarlijkse onderzoek naar het leefklimaat en de persoonlijke veiligheid in grote steden rekening met het aantal ziekenhuizen en gezondheidsinstellingen in een stad. Verder wordt gekeken naar het verkeer, de luchtvervuiling, de kwaliteit van afvalverwerking en het rioleringssysteem.
Bagdad scoort door de continue dreiging van geweld en de slechte gesteldheid van de infrastructuur het slechtst. De stad wordt gezien als de onveiligste stad ter wereld.
Voor de topsporters die in augustus moeten scoren op de Olympische Spelen wordt het ook geen pretje. Athene is door het bureau bestempeld als ongezondste stad van West-Europa. Luchtvervuiling is de grootste boosdoener.
De Canadese stad Calgary komt als winnaar uit de bus. Calgary is net boven Honolulu en Helsinki geëindigd en mag zich volgens Mercer de gezondste stad ter wereld noemen.
Amsterdam in top-ten again of cities with best quality of life

As last year, Amsterdam is again in tenth place of the world's cities with the best quality of life. This is what the international agency Mercer Human Resource Consulting concludes in an annual quality-of-life survey among 215 cities around the world.
In Amsterdam, traffic remains a point of concern, according to Mercer. The construction of the North-South metro-line will not make things better. Traffic congestions and poor traffic circulation will not quickly disappear from the streets.
In this annual survey of the quality-of-life and personal security in major cities, Mercer takes into account the number of hospitals and health institutions in a city. Also, consideration is given to traffic, air pollution, the quality of waste processing, and the sewage system.
Due to the continuous threat of violence and the bad state of the infrastructure, Bagdad gets the worst score. The city is regarded as the world's unsafest city.
Moreover, it will not be much fun for top athletes who have to perform well at the Olympics in August. Athens has been branded by the agency as the unhealthiest city in Western Europe. Air pollution is the main culprit.
The Canadian city of Calgary ends up as the winner. Calgary has come out marginally higher than Honolulu and Helsinki and, according to Mercer, it can call itself the world's healthiest city.
