Nederlands wereldwijd steeds populairder

Het Nederlands wordt wereldwijd als taal steeds populairder. Dat constateert de Internationale Vereniging voor Neerlandistiek (IVN). Waren er 25 jaar geleden wereldwijd nog maar 165 universiteiten in 26 landen waar Nederlands als vak werd gedoceerd, tegenwoordig zijn het er 230 in 44 landen. Het aantal docenten verdubbelde tot 700.
Dat is zeer respectabel voor een taal die door een beperkt aantal wereldburgers wordt gesproken, zegt woordvoerder M. Kristel van de IVN. De universiteiten bevinden zich in alle windstreken: van Italië tot Indonesië, van Spanje tot Georgië, van Duitsland tot Zuid-Afrika en van Japan tot Maleisië.
Wij Nederlanders hebben geen hoge dunk van onze eigen taal, stelt Kristel. Als iemand Nederlands gaat studeren, wordt hij vaak wat meewarig aangekeken. En dat terwijl Nederlands een veel meer gesproken taal is dan Zweeds of Fins.
Nederlands is voor 21 miljoen wereldburgers de moedertaal en is daarmee 34ste op de ranglijst van meest gesproken talen. In de ‘ranglijst van importantie’ staat het Nederlands echter in de top-twintig. Economisch, cultureel en historisch praat Nederlands zijn woordje mee op het wereldtoneel. Veel studenten Nederlands in het buitenland worden tolk of journalist, werken in het toerisme of voor een Nederlands bedrijf.
Tweehonderd van de zevenhonderd docenten Nederlands komen eind deze
maand naar Groningen voor een internationaal congres over de Nederlandse
taal.

The Dutch language is increasing its world-wide popularity. This is the conclusion of the International Association for Dutch Studies (IVN). Whereas 25 years ago, there were only 165 universities in 26 countries world-wide where Dutch was taught as a subject, today there are 230 in 44 countries. The number of teachers doubled to 700.
That is very respectable for a language spoken by a limited number of world citizens, says spokesperson M. Kristel of the IVN. The universities are located in all corners of the world: from Italy to Indonesia, from Spain to Georgia, from Germany to South Africa and from Japan to Malaysia.
We, the Dutch, do not think much of our own language, argues Kristel. If a person is going to study Dutch, he is often looked at somewhat pityingly. Even though Dutch is a much more widely spoken language than Swedish or Finnish.
For 21 million world citizens, Dutch is the native language, thus ranking it in 34th place on the list of most widely spoken languages. In the ranking of the ‘list of importance’, however, the Dutch language is in the top-twenty. Economically, culturally and historically, the Netherlands can speak its piece on the world stage.Many foreign students of Dutch become interpreters or journalists, work in tourism or for Dutch companies.
Two hundred out of seven hundred teachers of Dutch will come to Groningen
at the end of this month for an international conference about the
Dutch language.
